Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) must strengthen its Health Department to tackle the dengue menace in the Selangor municipality.
Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh said MPSJ lacked the manpower to continuously monitor the residential and commercial areas.
"MPSJ and the other local councils don't have enough manpower and this should be addressed by the Health Ministry. It has to pass down its expertise to the councils," she said after launching the Community Garden project at SS19/1 yesterday evening.
"There must be more than one health director to monitor the dengue situation. We can't expect the department to cover Seri Kembangan, Puchong, Serdang and Subang Jaya with its limited manpower," she said.
Yeoh also said the Selangor government needed to review its cleaning services contracts in light of the dengue outbreak.
"Currently, cleaning is being carried out once every two weeks. The breeding cycle for mosquitoes is seven days. The contractors have to change their cleaning schedule to once a week," she said.
Yeoh hoped Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali would take the matter seriously and review the cleaning contracts.
"The scope must change as many people have fallen victim to dengue," she said.
Yeoh said another area of concern was schools, which have become potential breeding grounds.
“Last week, SMK USJ 2 was found to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The Education Ministry must step in to address the issue as MPSJ are not allowed into the schools," she said.
The Malaysian Insider had reported that the Selangor government must come up with a more comprehensive plan to fight the dengue menace in the state.
Klang MP Charles Santiago had said that Azmin should create more awareness of its dengue eradication programmes.
"There is a serious lack of awareness of what the state government is doing to tackle the dengue issue.
"Azmin should set up a task force and give a weekly update on the authorities’ progress on handling the problem," he had said.
Santiago had said that Selangor had the highest number of dengue-related fatalities in the country, with 84 deaths between January and the first week of August this year.
There were 201 deaths from dengue in Malaysia in the same period.
Santiago had also said that there were 40,000 cases of dengue in Selangor during the same period.
Meanwhile, Yeoh praised SS19/1 residents for their efforts in setting up the Community Garden.
"It is a good initiative by the residents. The Community Garden will not only serve the people, but will also serve as an educational tool for the children," she said after pledging RM5,000 to the SS19/1 residents’ association.
