TOTAL LOSS OF SUPPORT: Nobody clapped for Najib till Shahidan had to beg - 'THE MORE YOU CLAP, THE MORE YOU CAN ASK FOR'
Umno president Najib Razak said that Malays and Muslims would be 'bastardised' if Umno no longer ruled the country.
"Some people say that the Malays will be defeated, beaten or fall flat on the ground but I choose the word 'bastardise' (Terbangsat).
He was in Perlis today in Kangar to officiate the Umno delegates meeting for the Padang Besar, Kangar and Arau branches.
"The Malays and Muslims would lose everything if Umno loses power," he added, to loud cheers from the crowd.
He urged Umno leaders to find solutions if there were internal problems in the country.
He said the party had weathered many storms since it was formed and there was surely a formula for Umno to find solutions to its problems.
He added that even though he was being criticised and there were attempts to involve him in alleged scandals, he would continue his work to improve the party as he did not steal the people's money nor had he broken any law.
"I will surely not destroy the party. My late father built this party," he said.
The prime minister also insisted that he would stay put in his position as long as the rakyat supported him.
Najib said he was touched by the words of a woman delegate who him this morning, greeting him saying, "datuk seri, please stay put".
"Insyaallah, I will stay put as long as the rakyat and Umno support me," he declared.
Najib said never before he had the chance to officiate all branches in a state like Perlis.
He was possibly hinting about other states like Kedah, Johor and Pahang, where certain branches preferred to invite those critical of his leadership like sacked former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin (photo) and Shafie Apdal, who was also sacked as minister.
Both were dropped from Najib's cabinet in July for questioning his handling of the 1MDB issue.
Also present at the function were Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man, who is also the party's state information chief, federal minister and state Umno and Arau chief Shahidan Kassim.
Hundreds present
Hundreds from the Public Defence Department, a government security agency, were present to greet Najib.
Najib, was greeted by a choir, whose members wore black and white t-shirts with words like 'dare to fight' and '#solidarity'.
The group sang a heroic song to the beat of dangdut, and performed M.Nasir's award winning piece 'Mentera Semerah Padi'.
However, when Najib walked into the dewan, the 2000-odd Umno members did not clap or cheer him.
At the beginning of his speech, Shahidan asked the crowd to clap louder, adding "the more you clap, the more you can ask for.
After requesting for several projects for the state, including a building for the state Umno, Shahidan told the crowd to pledge their support for Najib. - M'kini
