He said to his knowledge, the donation was never brought up in any Supreme Council meetings.
"For as long as I have been in the Supreme Council, we were never told," he told reporters after opening the Umno Parit Sulong division meeting in Johor today.
Shafie's remarks echo those of ‎Umno Supreme Council member Tan Sri Shahrir Samad member who said separately that the party's highest decision-making body had never asked about political donations going to the trustee accounts held by its president or treasurer, nor were its members ever briefed on such matters.
Shahrir had said that this was the case since the administration for former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was also the then Umno president.
The RM2.6 billion that went to Najib's accounts was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on July 2, which cited information from government investigators probing into 1MDB.
Najib denied taking funds from 1MDB for personal use but did not address the transfers to his accounts.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has now said the money was not from 1MDB but was a donation instead, from a Middle Eastern donor whose identity it withheld.
Najib and some of his supporters in Umno have since said that there was nothing wrong in him holding political donations in trust for the party as its president.
Shafie today said that alleged wrongdoing involving 1MDB had stirred unease among the Umno grassroots, some of whom were confused over the matter.
He again called for clear answers and a solution to ending the troubles of the debt-ridden fund, which had caused Umno and the government to suffer a loss of credibility. Najib is also finance minister and chairman of 1MDB's advisory board.
"It's not that we want to sound like the opposition, but we are speaking up and giving our views for the sake of strengthening the Umno that we love," he said.
Shafie, as well as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, were removed from the Cabinet by Najib in a move seen as an attempt to silence criticism from within over 1MDB.
