We saw the excuse coming, says Tian Chua

Najib’s “political funding” justification was not unexpected, but also irrelevant.

KUALA LUMPUR: We saw that coming, says PKR’s Tian Chua of the reason given by prime minister Najib Razak for the now-infamous RM2.6 billion that was revealed to have been transferred into his private accounts.
“We anticipated that they were going to say that,” says Chua, who is MP for Batu and PKR vice president. Najib’s justification, about a month after the Wall Street Journal published its expose of 1Malaysia Development Bhd, was a case of too little, too late.
“Right now, it’s not about political funding. This is about the prime minister getting caught transferring money from a state-owned company owned 100% by the Ministry of Finance into his personal account,” he told Free Malaysia Today in an interview.
“There was no indication prior to the WSJ reports that such funds existed for political reasons. To say that it was political funding a month after the revelations…that’s a little too long, isn’t it? Why wasn’t he upfront from the beginning to say that yes, it was political funding?” Tian Chua said.
Chua said the onus was on the Opposition to provide a solution. The Opposition could not afford to overlook ethical wrongs for the sake of political benefit as doing so would compromise their own ethical standing.
“Some hardcore Opposition supporters say why bother? Let Najib continue so you can win big in the next elections. That argument cannot hold water. Even if you are in the Opposition, you must hold certain ethical standards,” he said.
“You can’t say some injustices benefit me in the future. If you take that sort of attitude, then our ethical standing will be no different from Umno’s or what the current ruling elites are doing. They don’t want to correct wrongs because they benefit by not doing so.”
The need to take action also arose from the people’s need for voted representatives to perform their duties and solve the people’s problems. “The people don’t vote for us because they want to see us win big next round. People vote for us because they want us to be able to perform a certain function and solve their problems,” he said.
The current spate of arrests of demonstrators and activists made immediate action all the more necessary.
“There is no guarantee either when we come to the next elections that there will not be a “2MDB”. And with the regime going so far as to take in demonstrators under Section 124 (the Penal Code provision on activities against parliamentary democracy), many of us may not even be free enough to stand for elections. It will not be a meaningful election if we just drag on like this. The imperative and responsibility that rests on us is that we must be able to provide some form of solution to the current situation.”
