Zam: Zeti being smeared in prelude to removing her

“From being a woman who can do no wrong, and hailed as a great central bank governor, her name is being deliberately and systematically smeared.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin readily acknowledges that he has been involved in psychological warfare before but what’s happening to Bank Negara Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, the darling of the international financial community, has never happened before in the history of the nation or anywhere in the world.
“From being a woman who can do no wrong, and hailed as a great central bank governor, her name is being deliberately and systematically smeared.”
“It seems that the people are being subject to conditioning to justify and pave the way for Zeti’s removal as Bank Negara Governor,” said Zainuddin. “They are being conditioned not to be sympathetic to her when the axe falls on her career at the central bank.”
“The powers that be want the people to simply accept whatever fate they have in store for Zeti.”
The skies are not always clear, conceded Zainuddin and in Zeti’s case the storm clouds are gathering.
“When the investigations by the Special Task Force were put off, she as a member was mentioned as one of the conspirators involved in plotting the downfall of the government.”
So, he continued, the news is being spread that she will be detained, investigated and retired from her job as Bank Negara Governor.
“Many are concerned that appears to be a real possibility. The public fears have increased after the bangang bloggers, Najib’s media, raised several matters that touch on the Bank Negara Governor’s integrity.”
He cited an interview in The Star on 7 August by K. K. Eswaran, the President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, wherein he asked why no one was questioning Zeti on the allegations against her. “When allegations are made against the Prime Minister on social media, everyone says he has to clear it,” Zainuddin quoted Eswaran as saying.
Zainuddin wonders why Eswaran never raised whatever he wants to raise against the Bank Negara Governor when Najib was not under attack, at a time when the nation was at peace and there was no crisis of confidence, as now, in the leadership. “It seems that Eswaran only knows now about Zeti. What wrong did she do to him to invite such attacks against her in The Star?”
The Bank Negara Governor’s integrity has so far never been questioned, he recalled. “On the contrary, her wise stewardship of the central bank has been hailed by many far and wide. It was something that the people were proud of and this public image of her was widely promoted.”
Her services as the head of the central bank, added Zainuddin, were extended all the time although she should have retired by now. “It was not easy finding someone to fill her shoes. She had set a very high benchmark, a hard act to follow for anyone coming after her. So, it was easier to keep extending her stay at the central bank.”
Zainuddin argued that Zeti’s contribution towards stabilizing the economy and the nation especially during times of economic crisis could not be underestimated. “Her parents too, Royal Professor Ungku Aziz and the late Azah Aziz, surely were proud that their only child carved a name for herself in international finance and in helping manage the country’s monetary policies.”
