Former Penang Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan who is currently detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) was discharged from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital yesterday after doctors cleared him of dengue.
He left the hospital yesterday after spending more than two weeks recuperating from the illness.
His lawyer, Matthias Chang, said Khairuddin was being detained at the Dang Wangi police headquarters pending his hearing on October 13.
"He will be detained at Dang Wangi until his habeas corpus hearing on October 13. I will be meeting him tomorrow,” said Chang.
Khairuddin is challenging his detention under the act.
He was remanded under the counter-terrorism law for lodging a police report against 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and admitted to hospital on September 25 evening due to high fever which was later confirmed to be dengue.
Sources familiar with the case told The Malaysian Insider that Khairuddin’s remand ends on October 21. which means that an early release will be in place if he wins the case.
Bernama reported four days ago that he said his detention was an abuse of the legal process for wrongly using Sosma when his actions were not at all related to terrorism.
Khairuddin was rearrested under Sosma on September 23 at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex after his remand order under Section 124C of the Penal Code expired.
Khairuddin was first arrested by police at his home in Mont Kiara on September 18 under Section 124C of the Penal Code for activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
Earlier the same day, he and Chang were barred from leaving the country by Immigration officers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Khairuddin had been detained as his move to use foreign enforcement agencies to put pressure on Malaysia over the 1MDB issue could be deemed an act of sabotage against the nation.
Khairuddin first lodged a police report against the state owned 1MDB in December last year, and was sacked from Umno for being declared a bankrupt.
He recently lodged reports with authorities in Hong Kong, Switzerland, France and the United Kingdom against the troubled firm, of which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is chairman of the advisory board.
It was reported that he was on his way to meet Federal Bureau of Investigation officials in the United States when he was barred from leaving the country.
