KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Vice-President Shafie Apdal has stressed that there is nothing wrong with party members voicing their opinions if it can benefit the ruling party ultimately.
He said this when asked for his comments about former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad calling on Umno members yesterday to be brave in speaking the truth.
“Yes, that (being brave) is recommended and they (Umno members) have the right to voice their views,” he said, adding that it should be done not just for the sake of voicing an opinion but for the purpose of strengthening the party.
“These opinions should be accepted positively, not negatively,” he told reporters after visiting victims of the Kampung Simunul settlement fire in Semporna, yesterday.
Yesterday during the Bicara Negarawan with Mahathir at a hotel in Tawau, the former premier called on Umno members to be brave in voicing their opinions and in upholding the truth.
Mahathir, a harsh critic of Prime Minister Najib Razak, has repeatedly called for the latter’s resignation for his failure in handling the mounting debts of the state-owned investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB). He also claimed Najib lied about the RM2.6 billion donation given by an Arab donor that was channelled into his private bank accounts.
“An opinion or piece of advice given by anyone who is important to us, especially Umno members, is essential.
“They love this party and they should voice (their opinions) for the sake of Umno.”
Shafie was sacked from his post as minister of Rural and Regional Development on July 28 after he and former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin criticised 1MDB and urged Najib to answer all allegations of corruption levelled against him.
