PETALING JAYA: A Pahang football fan was arrested today for allegedly insulting Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Johor Crown Prince and owner of the Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) football club, on Twitter.tmj
Masyhur Abdullah, 29, was initially hauled to the Batu 9 Police Station in Cheras this afternoon and is now said to be on his way to the Johor Baru police headquarters.
His lawyer, Chan Kheng Fai said that Masyhur is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for his Twitter post.
“Masyhur is probably being brought to Johor because the report was lodged there. He will be brought to the Johor High Court tomorrow for the police to obtain the remand order,” Chan said when contacted by FMT.
Section 233 deals with the “improper use of network facilities or network service”, wherewith a person who makes any “comment, request, suggestion or other communication” intended to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person using said facilities commits an offence.
Prior to his arrest, several Facebook groups had urged that police reports be made against Masyhur.
Netizens also shared some images posted by Masyhur attempting to relate the alleged offensive tweet to a Photoshopped image of Tunku Ismail “dining” on an elephant.
The Photoshopped image went viral after JDT defeated the Pahang football team 6-0 in the Super League match last week.
Tunku Ismail was reported as saying that the image of him “eating” the elephant was made in jest and “a little bit of psychological warfare”.
Masyhur’s tweet could see him fined up to RM50,000, or imprisoned for not more than a year, or both, if convicted.
FMT has been made to understand that Masyhur’s predicament has received the attention of human rights organisation Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram).
Padma Zachariah, a friend of Masyhur’s, said that police had arrived at Masyhur’s house at around 10am.
“At the time, I was sending a maid to clean his house as he had requested. By the time I went to his house again at 11 o’clock, he was already gone,” Padma said.
“I went directly to the Batu 9 police station and found out that the police officers that had gone to his house came from Johor,” she said, adding that the police officers had behaved professionally all throughout Masyhur’s arrest.
Last December, two men were arrested simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur and Pahang and investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for allegedly insulting the Johor sultanate on social media.
