IGP: More claim extorted by MyWatch chief

Show more reactions
Three more people have come forward claiming they were extorted by Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) chairperson R Sri Sanjeevan, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
Speaking at a press conference in Ampang today, Khalid said the three approached the police after news of Sanjeevan's arrest came out.
The crime watchdog chief was arrested together with his driver for criminal intimidation and extortion on Wednesday in a police sting.

This follows a complaint from a man, said to be an illegal gambling den operator, who claimed Sanjeevan had threatened to expose him online if he did not pay protection money.
Khalid said the complainant is currently being protected as a witness, and police currently don't plan to press charges.
"He is a cooperative informant being protected under the Witness Protection Act," the top cop said.
He said police are still considering whether to extend witness protection to the other three who claimed they were extorted by Sanjeevan.

Sanjeevan is currently being remanded till Thursday.
Meanwhile, on his promise last year to stop all illegal gambling operation in the country, Khalid said police are facing difficulty in doing so, as to detect and monitor all the gambling dens would require a lot of manpower.
He added that police were also having a hard time as some gambling dens hid their operations under the guise of entertainment and snooker outlets.
"That's why we suggested for all entertainment outlets to be placed in one area within every state. This will make it easier for enforcement authorities to monitor their activities." -Mkini
