Surendran's bid to strike out sedition charge dismissed

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today dismissed PKR lawmaker N Surendran’s application to strike out his sedition charge.
After hearing arguments from both sides, High Court judge Nordin Hassan said the sedition charge did not amount to an interference of a lawyer’s duty.
As such, he dismissed Surendran’s application, which was filed on June 7.
Surendran had previously said that he had allegedly uttered the seditious remarks when he came out of court after representing jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at the Federal Court.

As the charge relates to something he said in his capacity as a lawyer, it is an interference of his duties, he said in his affidavit in support of the application.
Surendran was charged under the Sedition Act for his remarks on Anwar's Sodomy II case in August 2014.
He had allegedly said that Anwar's Sodomy II charge was a political conspiracy involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak when he was leaving the Federal Court on Aug 8, 2014.
