Banners emerge on fake forum to expose Azmin's 'RM400m scandal'

Several banners have been put up in various areas promoting a purported forum to expose a corruption scandal linked to Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali.
According to the banners, which have appeared in Ampang, Gombak and Shah Aalam, the speakers would be PKR’s Rafizi Ramli and Akmal Nasir as well as graft watchdog C4 chief Cynthia Gabriel.
The trio, stated the banner, would be exposing a RM400 million scandal involving the PKR deputy president at a forum to be moderated by International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) associate professor Maszlee Malik, in Ampang on Saturday night.
Denying that such a forum had been planned, Akmal claimed that it is an attempt to divert attention from the issues plaguing the nation’s leadership at present.
"These are the evil lies of those who want to distract the public from the 1MDB scandal and also 'Malaysian Official 1'," he told Malaysiakini.
He added that this was also an attempt to weaken public resolve to protest against the government either through elections or demonstrations.
Akmal, who heads the National Oversight & Whistleblowers (NOW), claimed this showed that the government was rattled by the findings of the US Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding 1MDB.
The DOJ last week filed lawsuits to seize more than US$1 billion in assets bought with funds allegedly siphoned from 1MDB.

The US authorities claimed that overall, more than US$3.5 billion of 1MDB monies had been misappropriated.
The DOJ's suits implicated Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's stepson Riza Aziz, and Penang-born tycoon Jho Low.
It also mentioned that an unnamed public officer dubbed 'Malaysian Official 1' had received US$731 million of the swindled 1MDB funds. - Mkini
