A group of 110 Selangor Umno grassroots members announced last night that they are joining the splinter Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
The members, from Serdang, Kapar and Kota Damansara, handed in their membership forms to Bersatu at an event hosted by former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir in Shah Alam.
Kota Damasara Umno division's Semarak branch leader Jefri Salleh submitted 100 membership forms from those who left the Serdang, Kapar and Kota Damansara Umno divisions.
Kota Raja Umno branch deputy chief Mohd Hamidi Abu Bakar headed the group.
Hamidi said this group is only the "first wave" and promised to lead more members to quit the ruling party.
His move follows Umno minister Nazri Abdul Aziz reportedly challenging Hamidi, in May this year, to follow the party rebels to quit.
"Tonight is only the first wave, and it will be followed by subsequent waves (of departure).
"I will encourage more Umno members to join Bersatu," Hamidi said at the event titled 'Malaysia Bersatu bersama Mukhriz'
Among those who joined Bersatu last night were Serdang Umno division committee member Zainurin Ariffin as well as Umno Youth executive council member and Kapar Umno branch leader Mahathir Mansor.-Mkini
