MCA: Forest City investors using Dr M’s ‘second home’ policy

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad should know if investors from China will receive citizenship, because they are investing under a policy he introduced, said MCA central committee member Jason Teoh.
Teoh said investors of the Forest City development project in Gelang Patah are doing so under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) which was introduced by Mahathir when he was prime minister.
“As such, Mahathir himself knows just too well whether or not these Chinese investors will be easily given Malaysian citizenship, and whether or not the Johor government had been selling land to them,” he said in a statement.
The MM2H programme enables eligible foreigners to stay in Malaysia for as long as they want on multiple-entry social visit passes.
Each social visit pass is issued for a period of 10 years and is renewable.
Property purchase is not a prerequisite to qualify for the programme but foreigners applying are allowed to purchase residential property according to minimum price requirements of each state.
In Johor, foreigners participating in the MM2H programme are allowed buy property worth at least RM1 million.
Teoh, who is also MCA Gelang Patah division chief, said this after Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar lambasted Mahathir for being opportunistic over the investments from China into Forest City.
Mahathir had raised concerns that the number of China investors buying property there, and questioned if the investors will eventually be awarded citizenship.
‘Stop stirring up the issue’
DAP veteran leader and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang also caught flak for Mahathir’s remarks, given DAP’s now closer ties with the former premier and his party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
Teoh said Kit Siang should explain his stand on the issue to Gelang Patah voters.
“The right thing to do for him is to immediately issue a statement in support of Mahathir’s statement, or if he chooses to keep his lips sealed, he will be deemed to have agreed with Sultan Ibrahim,” he said.
“We want all the twisted-minded politicians, including Mahathir and Kit Siang, to immediately stop stirring up the issue of Chinese investment to provoke racial tension,” Teoh said.
Agreeing, Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi also urged Kit Siang to explain why it is problematic for Johor to attract Chinese investors when Penang, led by son Lim Guan Eng also has investment from China.
He said Mahathir was exploiting the China investment issue because it is “sensitive” and “sellable” in Malaysian politics.
“It’s true that he is not stupid. In fact, Mahathir was the one who brought in these foreign investors in his 22 years as PM,” Puad said in a statement.
“So the rebuke by the Johor sultan is an eye-opener, especially for the people of Johor, to differentiate between those playing politics and those who truly want to bring prosperity to the people.”- Mkini
