KUCHING: The Chinese in Sarawak hope a Chinese assemblyman will be appointed one of the deputy chief ministers of the state, according to the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions.
The Borneo Post quoted its president Richard Wee as saying the last Chinese deputy chief minister was George Chan, who served between Sept 9, 1996, and April 16, 2011.
In expressing support for Abang Johari Openg as chief minister, Wee said: “He has always been very supportive of Chinese education and culture. If we had any request for him, very seldom would he turn us down.”
Pointing out that there was a vacancy for one of the deputy CM’s posts, Wee said the time was right for each of the three major races – the Malays, the Dayaks and the Chinese – in Sarawak to have representation in state government as deputy chief minister.
He said this at a welcoming dinner for the performers of ‘Culture of China, Festival of Spring’ at a restaurant here on Sunday.
He said when the present Sarawak Local Government Minister Dr Sim Kui Hian won the Batu Kawah seat in the state election last year, there was talk that Sim would be appointed deputy chief minister but it did not materialise.
He hoped Abang Johari would continue the legacy of the late Adenan Satem who died last week. -FMT
