IGP protected Guan Eng when debate was cancelled, Rahman claims

The inspector-general of police’s order to cancel a debate between the then-housing, local government and urban wellbeing minister and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had protected the latter from the risk of self-incrimination, said Abdul Rahman Dahlan.
The then-housing minister said unlike the upcoming debate between Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Lim was under an investigation on the debate topic whereas Nazri and Mahathir are not.
“When the inspector-general decided to ask me to cancel it (the debate), to a certain degree he was protecting Lim. That’s because there was an ongoing investigation at the time that led to corruption charges against Lim.
“Had the debate had taken place, it would open opportunities or cause Lim - in the heat of fielding questions in a debate - to incriminate himself because the investigation was ongoing,” Rahman, who is now the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit, told a press conference in Shah Alam today.
He said many people had linked the cancelled debate between him and Lim with the upcoming debate between Mahathir and Nazri, even though the circumstances surrounding the two debates are different.

The debate between Lim and Abdul Rahman was over alleged improprieties over the Penang government’s sale of land in Taman Manggis.
Lim is currently facing trial at the Penang High Court for two counts of corruption over the Taman Manggis issue.

At the press conference today, Abdul Rahman also said he was making preparations with TV3 to hold the live TV debate up to the final moments before it was called off.
He reiterated that he does not shy away from debating members of the opposition, and had done so on numerous occasions in the past, whether in or outside Parliament.

Meanwhile, Nazri and Mahathir are set to debate topics such as 1MDB, the RM2.6 billion transfer into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's accounts, and the BMF scandal that occurred during Mahathir's premiership.

It is scheduled to take place on April 7 in Shah Alam.

Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman had expressed concern that the debate would affect the party ‘if they hurl accusations at each other’.

Asked if he shares such concerns, Abdul Rahman who is also the BN strategic communications director replied, “I don’t mind. Debates are okay”.- Mkini
