No returning to Umno even if Najib quits - Muhyiddin

Even if Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak steps down from helming Umno, his former deputy Muhyiddin Yassin has no plans to return to the party.
The current president of Umno-splinter party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in a programme organised by his party in Padang Rengas, Perak last night acknowledged how he had been a member of Umno for 50 years.
The former Umno deputy president cited an instance in which he was asked whether he would return to Umno should Najib resign from the Umno leadership.
“I replied that the decision to not be in Umno is final,” affirmed Muhyiddin, to cheers of “hidup tan sri” from the audience.
And this, he stressed, is despite any offers to do so, no matter how good the offer may be.
“Because what is the point of returning to Umno since it is no longer a party which we once knew to have fought for race, religion and country.”
Muhyiddin was axed as deputy prime minister in July 2015 after he became increasingly vocal with regard to the handling of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) fiasco.
A year later, he was sacked, together with former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir, from Umno after the two appeared on the same stage with the opposition.
Meanwhile, admitting that Umno was instrumental in the country obtaining its independence, Muhyiddin however cited recent claims made by others that Umno only champions the fight of one person – Prime Minister Najib Razak.
“It has strayed from the right path and is utterly ruined.
“So do we want to return to a party that has been utterly ruined – a party which no longer can fight for the fate of the people?”
He added that the country, under Najib, is in “such an embarrassing” state that the once respected country is now “at such a bad place”.
Meanwhile, citing the ever-rising burdens shouldered by the rakyat, Muhyiddin argued that this is the reason why it is time to “forget Umno”.
“Let us hijrah (migrate), there’s nothing wrong with leaving Umno.
“I have asked many religious scholars whether it is wrong to leave Umno and to become Bersatu members; the answer is no, in fact, this hijrah is for something good.”
Expressing hope that Padang Rengas itself would witness a “huge change”, Muhyiddin pointed out how the Perak state assembly itself needed only a few seats for the opposition to helm it.

“Together with Pakatan Harapan in a formidable team, I predict that Perak will fall (to the opposition).
“Padang Rengas' Nazri (Abdul Aziz) will fall in the next general election, insya 'Allah,” he said, referring to the incumbent Padang Rengas lawmaker.
Nazri and Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad were supposed to debate each other on various issues in Kuala Kangsar, but the debate had to be postponed after it failed to obtain the green light from local police.
The two instead met there over cendol yesterday.- Mkini
