UiTM student wins Asean oratory competition

He spoke on ‘Asean Heritage, Our Identity’ and won a cash prize of RM1,000 and a trophy.
speeh-uitmTANJUNG MALIM: A student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam was crowned champion of the Asean Oratory Competition for the Aminuddin Baki Trophy, organised by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
Adam Muhammad Taufiq Mohamad Suharto, 21, a diploma programme student from UiTM’s Faculty of Creative Writing, beat six other contestants in the final today.
The speech titled “Warisan Asean-Identity Kita” (“Asean Heritage, Our Identity”) saw the contestant take home a cash prize of RM1,000 and a trophy.
The prize was presented by Perak Youth Council deputy president Mohd Zaidi Aziz.
The competition, based on the theme “Kesepakatan Asean” (“Asean Solidarity”) and held at the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus in Proton City here, was to inculcate love for knowledge among students beyond the classroom.
Meanwhile, Zaidi in his speech said public speaking was important, and students should be exposed to it as the skill was one of the requirements to enter the job market.
Meanwhile, UiTM is offering places to 3,000 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) school leavers who failed to pursue further studies despite obtaining excellent results.
Vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Hassan Said said the opportunity would be given to students from poor families and rural areas who could not continue their studies due to various factors, among them financial constraints.
He said the university aimed to double last year’s student intake for the 2017 academic session.
“The university is confident that the figure can be achieved as the new campuses in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, and Raub, Pahang, are ready for occupation.” --FMT
