PAS wants an RCI held on Memali tragedy

PAS has called for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to look into the 1985 Memali tragedy.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the RCI would set the record straight on what actually happened.
"As there have been various statements that contradict with facts, PAS calls for a fair and transparent investigation to uncover the Memali tragedy," Tuan Ibrahim said in a statement today.
He added that the RCI would also help clear the names of the innocent in the November 1985 tragedy.
Fourteen villagers and four police officers had been killed during the incident in Memali, Kedah, 32 years ago, when police moved to arrest PAS leader Ibrahim 'Libya' Mahmood, who among those killed.
The call for an RCI comes three days after chaos erupted at a forum when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was answering a question on the Memali tragedy.
Mahathir - who was prime minister when the tragedy occurred - had been asked why the police had killed the villagers.
The nonagenarian said police were retaliating after being attacked, an answer he reiterated yesterday in a Facebook video.
"If you come with parang and kill police officers, they must be prepared to face retaliation from the police," he had said.
However, Tuan Ibrahim argued, survivors and eyewitnesses of the tragedy, who attended a PAS forum on the matter in 2014, claimed that the government White Paper on the Memali incident tabled by the Mahathir government was filled with lies.
Yesterday, the son of a survivor also said that Mahathir had the blood of the victims on his hands.

Mahathir has for a long time insisted he was not in the country when the clashes took place.
In 2014, he admitted to being in Malaysia when the police clashed with the Kampung Memali villagers.
However, Mahathir insisted that any responsibility should fall on his then deputy, Musa Hitam, who was acting prime minister at the time, as well as home minister, which put him in charge of the police. -Mkini
