PETALING JAYA: Jamal Yunos, the Sungai Besar Umno chief, revealed that he was ostracised by family members who felt embarrassed by his “towel protest” outside the Selangor state secretariat (SUK) building in Shah Alam last year.
“When I appeared in a towel at SUK, I was called a mad man, insane. On social media, people condemned me, and some of my nephews were embarrassed of me.
“Some of them even denied they knew me or acknowledged me as their uncle,” he told a talk show hosted by former Bernama host Dahlan Maamor, broadcast live over Facebook last night.
On Dec 21 last year, Jamal showed up at the entrance to the Selangor state administrative building, clad only in a towel and carrying toiletries, to protest against water supply disruptions in the Klang valley.
The water disruptions were due to Tenaga Nasional’s preventive maintenance work on its electrical units, affecting water supply to millions of Klang Valley residents.
Jamal defended his stunt, saying there had been no more water disruptions after he protested.
“Let me tell you why I was clad only in a towel. I live in Ampang since the 12th general election, my hometown is Sungai Besar. The water problems began after Azmin took over as menteri besar,” said Jamal, referring to Mohamed Azmin Ali who has frequently been a focus of his colourful protests.
He said despite being widely condemned over his stunt, it was all worth it.
“From the day I went there in a towel until today, my house in Ampang as well as my neigbours have not experienced any water disruption. So the problem could be solved after all.” -FMT
