THE Malaysian Insight (TMI) chief executive officer and editor Jahabar Sadiq today lodged a police report over the leak of confidential information in his statement to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as part of investigations into the news portal.
In his police report, Jahabar said he discovered the leak in an article published by website Malaysian Gazette quoting Azwanddin Hamzah of Jaringan Melayu Malaysia, who alleged, among several things, that TMI’s holding company Inside Media Sdn Bhd received foreign funds.
“Azwanddin Hamzah of Jaringan Melayu Malaysia has leaked and twisted several facts I made in my statement to MCMC.
“I am concerned that my personal details in my statement, which are supposed to be confidential, have been leaked to Azwanddin and to the public through the article.
“The police should investigate how the leak happened and take appropriate action as this has eroded my faith in MCMC,” Jahabar said.
The report was lodged at the Sri Hartamas police station this morning by Jahabar who was accompanied by a lawyer.
The article which was published by the Malaysian Gazette yesterday, comes two days after Jahabar had gone to the MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya to give his statement.
MCMC is investigating TMI following calls by delegates at the recent Umno annual general assembly for the authorities to haul up the 9-month-old news portal for “insulting” the prime minister.
MCMC had also questioned Jahabar on an editorial that was critical of the royal commission of inquiry into Bank Negara’s forex losses.
Other people had also alleged leaks of statements made to investigating agencies.
Two weeks ago, a property consultant in Johor lodged a police report after alleging that his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in relation to a graft case, was leaked.
Amir Shariffuddin Abd Raub had fingered the MACC, former Johor exco Abd Latif Bandi and his counsel over a leaked statement on money having been given to the Johor menteri besar.
Amir is one of the suspects in a Johor property scandal. He lodged a police report as the leaked statement, which had gone viral, differed from the statement he had given to the anti-graft agency.
The 140-page statement given to the MACC was uploaded onto a blog, along with a transaction schedule purportedly showing money had been given to the menteri besar, Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
MACC had said it would lodge a police report over the leaked statement in the case, which is ongoing in court.
Senai assemblyman Wong Shu Qi of DAP had alleged at the state legislative assembly sitting that Khaled had received RM12 million from a developer to change the Bumiputera status of a residential plot of land to non-Bumiputera.
She said this was based on a witness statement in an investigation by MACC into Latif, the former state exco for housing and local government, and Amir.
