Anti-fake news bill to be tabled in Parliament next week

The government will table its anti-fake news bill in Parliament next week, after the cabinet approved the bill in a meeting today.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said said a briefing session for BN and opposition lawmakers on the bill will be held soon.
"This bill is being formulated to protect the public from fake news, and from becoming victims of fake news.
"However this bill will not in any way stifle the people's freedom of speech as provided for under the constitution," she said in a statement today.
The announcement comes after Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari said that any 1MDB-related information which was unverified would be considered fake news
Previously, Jailani had said that media publishing "fake news" about 1MDB included The Wall Street JournalThe New York TimesThe EconomistAustralian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) and MSNBC.
Azalina said the bill sends a clear message that the government will not compromise on any matter that could threaten public order and national security.
She also said the government hoped that all quarters would accept the bill and not launch polemics. -Mkini
