Gov't subsidies for KR1M 2.0 in East Malaysia

The prices of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia 2.0 (KR1M 2.0) goods in East Malaysia will be the same as in Peninsular Malaysia thanks to government subsidies, said Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
At the launch of the second batch of KR1M 2.0 shops in Kuala Lumpur today, Zahid said the government will provide financial assistance to keep the transport costs of KR1M products low.
"That way Sabah and Sarawak can enjoy the same prices," he said.
KR1M is a government project which sells basic retail goods slightly below market price. The first phase, involving east coast outlets managed by TMG Mall, was launched last month.
Thirty-one new KR1M 2.0 shops, which will take up floor space in existing KK Super Mart outlets in the west coast of the peninsula and East Malaysia, were launched today.
Unlike its predecessor, KR1M 2.0 products will retain their original brands, and not be turned into in-house products.
The original KR1M chain, which was operated by supermarket operators Mydin Mohamed Holdings, ceased operations late last year due to losses.
The company's boss Ameer Ali Mydin revealed that KR1M was a CSR project, but one that ended up causing Mydin to lose over RM100 million.
The original KR1M scheme saw the government owning the premises and the assets, while Mydin operated the stores. -Mkini
