MP questions light sentence for corrupt ex-DBKL director

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng has questioned why a former Kuala Lumpur City Hall director was given a "light sentence" after being found guilty for abusing his power to purchase RM2 million worth of condominiums.
Lim also wanted to know if Syed Afendy Ali Syed Abid Ali still owns the condominiums after the verdict.
"He abused his power and was sentenced to just eight months imprisonment and (RM80,000) fine, when the offence involved eight condominiums worth RM2 million.
"This sends the wrong message to directors in other government agencies, that if they do wrong, and abuse their power for personal gain, when they get caught and sentenced in court, the punishment is just a few months in jail.
"I also want to ask the (Federal Territories) Ministry or a government spokesperson to comment on whether the eight condominiums will belong to Syed Afendy Ali or not after his eight months in prison," he said.
Lim was speaking at a press conference in the Parliament media room today.
A Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday sentenced Syed Affendy Ali to eight months’ jail and a fine of RM10,000 - in default of a year's jail - for each charge, and ordered the sentence to run concurrently.
The sentence has been postponed pending an appeal to the High Court. -Mkini
