Alwi says to purge civil service of Najib puppets

Former PSD chief doesn't name Ali Hamsa but says the Chief Secretary was among the 'jesters and puppets' of the former government.
Alwi Jantan, former head of the Public Services Department, says the civil service must be “cleansed”. (Youtube screengrab)
PETALING JAYA: The head of the civil service, Ali Hamsa, was indirectly described today as the lead player among the “jesters and puppets” in the former Najib Razak government.
He was named in a statement today by Alwi Jantan, former head of the Public Services Department, which oversees the hiring of government employees.
Alwi called for a purge of the civil service, saying that the new Pakatan Harapan federal government should “cleanse” the public services of “untrustworthy” characters” in order to restore the image and morale of the civil service.
He said he was ashamed to see top civil servants become “jesters and puppets” to the tune of the ruling party.
“Some even crossed the line to campaign openly for them. They descended from their high office of trust and impartiality down to the level of downright dishonesty and immorality,” he said, adding there was no need to name them as their antics were well publicised in the media.
Alwi, now a member of the G25 group of mainly retired civil servants and academics, had served the government for 32 years, beginning as an officer in the Federal Establishment Office in 1958 until his retirement in 1990 as director-general of the Public Services Department.
While he did not name Ali Hamsa in the statement, Alwi said the Chief Secretary to the Government, “as the head of the civil service, could have stopped these transgressions, but he himself was the lead player”.
Alwi said the government must cleanse the administration of such personalities. “Not only are they tainted and their loyalty in doubt, it will restore the image and morale of the public service to its former glory.” -FMT
