Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said 1MDB chief Arul Kanda Kandasamy must inform the ministry in writing on whether the state fund can or cannot repay its RM143 million debt due next week.
Failing this, he will not authorise the Finance Ministry to pay off 1MDB’s debt, he said.
“I have to sign the authorisation to pay debts of RM143 million on behalf of 1MDB by the end of this month.
“I was shocked that the first document I have to sign is to pay off debts of 1MDB and I refused to sign unless I see all the relevant documents.
“We have to make the payment before May 30 so as part of the procedure, he (Arul Kanda) has to inform the government.
“He is instructed to write that letter to state whether 1MDB can pay or cannot pay [...] he has to do it as soon as possible,” Lim told reporters at the lobby of the Finance Ministry building today.
He was speaking after a meeting with Arul Kanda, 1MDB’s former chief financial officer (CFO) Azmi Tahir and former general-counsel Ivan Chen.
Before that, he had had a separate meeting with two 1MDB directors, Norazman Ayob and Kamal Mohd Ali.
